I've worked on projects myself that says something along the lines of "She looks too white." when trying to remove the thought of any kind of "race". Doing that makes it easier for everyone to enjoy the character without the distraction of race. So a character like Jade would be removed from THAT category and can just be seen as homosapien if she doesn't look like any one group. Typically that's a reason you would use a female main character, because it's easier to make females ambiguous. So it may have been more along the lines of "We want a generic looking character so no one can claim her" as opposed to "We don't want a Africanesque character". Vanessa... I'm not touching that one. I honestly believe that, that case has everything to do with bigotry on some way shape or form.. whether it was Japanese game players refusing to play as her... or the developers thinking "We made a mistake." there isn't any justification for that, that I am willing to accept.
