In 2008, there was this swell of enthusiasm behind the "Change" candidate, Barack Obama, although the media may have overblown it, given that the voter turnout wasn't significantly higher than it was in 2004 or 2000. Still, just in the fact that the Democrats regained the Presidency, and huge majorities in both the House and the Senate, it was clear that people wanted something dramatically different.

When Obama first came onto the scene, he seemed to advocate for all sorts of leftist policies, or at least was very good at pretending to advocate for them. In truth, if we look back, he was always a centrist, and expertly danced around making any serious commitments to moving left. He was always, since he first appeared on the scene, a product of the "Chicago Machine", which is all about gaining or maintaining power vis-a-vis the status quo.

Now, 2 years later, the pendulum shifts the other way, with the Republicans gaining hugely in the House and significantly in the Senate. The reason many Democratic activists and party leaders cite for this shift is not their failure, oh no, but a growing apathy amongst their constituency.

As if the two things are unrelated.

Barack Obama, much to the criticism of the left, ceded too much to Republicans and the right, who sought to shoot him down regardless of any concessions he made. Because it was never and probably has never been about compromise, but about control. Even if Obama forwarded a completely right-wing agenda (and one could argue he has with regards to foreign policy), the Republicans would stand against him, simply because he is not a member of their party. They will never concede that any of the changes they want could be brought about by a Democrat. No, they need to be the ones to control and be rewarded for any changes that occur.

So the question that so many people asked of the Democrats was: "If they're going to shoot you down, anyway, why not just push the agenda that your constituency wants?" After all, the Democrats had virtually unchallengeable power and did not much need the Republicans for anything. Yet in spite of every concession made - and perhaps they weren't concessions, but the Democrats showing their true colors - the right would paint them as "socialists", paint this picture of "government as enemy", which is ironic given that it was part of the government itself making the claims.

In truth, Barack Obama is no closer to being a socialist than John McCain would have been. He is, on nearly every point, the enemy of socialism. But American exceptionalism being what it is - by this I mean their exceptional gullibility and capacity for boundless ignorance - the people on the right ate it up. The people on the left just sighed, because for all their enthusiasm in 2008, nothing much had "changed".

In 2008, the Democrats had the advantage of being the minority party, of being the party standing in clear opposition to George W. Bush, who by this time had become near unanimously condemned by the American public and the international community. They had the ability to say they would "change" what was currently happening.

Now in 2010, after 2 years of the Democrats holding all the cards and doing not much of anything to deliver on those promises of change, the advantage shifted to the Republicans as the party not in power, to be able to say that things would change simply by virtue of a shift in power. What people fail to understand, it seems, is that a change in party does not necessarily mean a change in policy.

George W. Bush was much more of a radical than Barack Obama. He brought about a ton of changes, more with respect to Clinton than Obama has with regards to him. But it had nothing to do with disillusionment with Clinton. It had to do with fear, starting with 9/11 and proceeding from there. People will make all sorts of irrational decisions when they're afraid. So, barring catastrophe, it has never been the case that a change in party represents a change in politics as usual in Washington.

It could be argued that the 8 years of Bush was enough of a catastrophe to warrant another serious change, and indeed it was that sense which enabled Obama to gather so much momentum. What he has done with that momentum, however, is to attempt to re-establish the Clintonian government, which was anything but radical.

It has been a running trend that the party of the President suffers serious losses in the following midterm elections. Why? Because every 2 years, at least, but more likely every day, people pine for "change", in one thing or another. And when, following pendulum shift and pendulum shift - Republicans ceding power to Democrats and Democrats ceding power back to Republicans - no such change occurs, it leads to a surge in enthusiasm from the President's political opponents, and a surge in apathy from the party's constituency.

Had Barack Obama actually been a socialist President, he would've brought about changes that this country has never seen, and the same sort of opposition would've gathered. However, in how such changes increased job growth, mitigated the increase in poverty, stood up for the everyman, provided everyone with comprehensive healthcare not for profit but because it is a necessity, forwarded a real civil rights agenda, and improved our image around the world, perhaps the opposition would've come only from the contrarians and the irrational fringe, rather than average disaffected citizens who in large numbers just wanted to see something different.

It's ironic, really, that people cry for change, yet they are so afraid of the kind of change that is actually needed. Socialism, because they don't understand it, because it is so different from what they know (and they know so very little) and because it still - somehow - is tied to anachronistic Cold War fears, became their Red Herring. But had the Democrats actually advanced an agenda that even hinged on socialism, and people saw the kinds of positive changes that it could bring about, they might change their tune.

But the Democrats, whose agenda has never changed, and is virtually the same as that of the Republicans (i.e. to stay in office), dared not push that far left, because rocking the boat too much apparently leads to major losses. It's a strange conclusion to come to, though, given that all historical evidence points to the contrary, that the pendulum shift is the status quo, that each party will rise and fall with unflinching regularity. All evidence was that the Democrats would lose big regardless of what they did or didn't do.

One would think that the only way to change this dynamic, to halt the pendulum shift, would be to swing the damn thing so far left that the pendulum would snap off altogether - sending the country in an entirely new direction. Of course I couldn't say with any certainty whether or not it would go flying towards rejuvenation or disaster, but a look around the world at other countries that have successfully instituted leftist policies, and at those that have failed miserably by instituting far right policies would suggest a positive outcome.

I realize that this is a very simplistic analysis, and that surely Democrats, well-trained in public policy, law, and everything else it takes to hold their positions, know all of this. If so, then one can only come to the conclusion that the pendulum shift, despite all their campaigning and rhetoric, is within acceptable parameters, and that they are content to let things play out as they will until it shifts back the other way.

Change, though? Of the sort required to keep their constituency enthusiastic? That would be too risky, might cost them too much, might eventually lead to some President instituting radical changes that throw the country into a downward spiral, make us hated around the world, trample all over civil liberties while providing for the triumph of big business.

Oh, wait.

So better to ride out this down tick in public opinion and wait for the inevitable backswing, right? Sure, so long as they have no intention of changing anything.

I haven't been blogging on a regular basis lately because just using the internet opens the floodgates to all sorts of infuriating things going on in the world. So I've been playing video games, writing fiction, and watching various TV shows - to provide myself a temporary (always only temporary) respite from the burden of being "aware". Aware of what? Well, the list below is of 20 things going on in the world that are pissing me off, making me sad, frustrated, or feeling hopeless. A mere 20 reasons for escapism out of hundreds. In no ranking order:

BP CEO saying that the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill is relatively tiny compared to the size of the ocean. By that logic, someone could argue that the over a million people killed in a war built on a false pretext is tiny compared to the 6 billion people in the world. Oh, wait...

SB 1070 - more popularly known as the "Arizona Immigration bill"

Arizona banning ethnic studies

Texas conservatives working to revise history along Biblical/American exceptionalist/racist lines in textbooks

Corporations authorized to buy U.S. elections after the Citizens United vs. Federal Elections Commission case

The surge of people "tweeting" and "microblogging" about nonsense while remaining dormant on things that matter

People wasting their time talking about Jay-Z is a devil-worshiping Freemason. Even if he is, who cares? There are bigger things to worry about.

I haven’t been blogging on a regular basis lately because just using the internet opens the floodgates to all sorts of infuriating things going on in the world. So I’ve been playing video games, writing fiction, and watching various TV shows – to provide myself a temporary (always only temporary) respite from the burden of being “aware”.

Oh, wait…

SB 1070 – more popularly known as the “Arizona Immigration bill”

Arizona banning ethnic studies

Texas conservatives working to revise history along Biblical/American exceptionalist/racist lines in textbooks

Corporations authorized to buy U.S. elections after the Citizens United vs. Federal Elections Commission case

The surge of people “tweeting” and “microblogging” about nonsense while remaining dormant on things that matter

People wasting their time talking about Jay-Z is a devil-worshiping Freemason. Even if he is, who cares? There are bigger things to worry about.

Republicans and Democrats both screwing the public through bankrupt policy, while continuing to trick people into thinking there’s any substantive difference between them.

The fact that legally, BP may only be obligated to pay no more than $75 million in damages, which doesn’t even begin to cover it, and that they’re fighting even that. You want to know what’s “tiny”? $75 million compared to the hundreds of billionsPDF that BP makes every year

How the people around me don’t know and don’t seem to care about what’s going on in the world

The weight of knowledge, of "consciousness", is heavy. I can neither look at nor listen to anything without a critical eye anymore, without it being immediately contextualized within my understanding of race, power, politics, and other such heavy subjects.

I was watching the 12th grade students at my internship put on their senior projects - videos that provided a snapshot into their lives - montages of baby pictures, friend testimonials, other things that they felt would put who they were into context for their viewers. And as I watched, there was the little spark of cynicism, the voice that said "must be nice". Must be nice, to be privileged to a life unburdened by any internal or external discussion about matters such as race or power, any personal struggle notwithstanding. The last part of that statement acknowledges that people of all colors and creeds experience struggle, but white privilege liberates white people from the additional burden of race, and all the meaning that goes along with it.

But as I watched these videos I did not begrudge these children their experiences, their ability to live without certain burdens. And I realized that I do not begrudge white people their privilege, either. Like when I watch any of the countless "neutral" or "normative" movies featuring the conflicts of white protagonists, where race is simply not an issue, I am able to be right there with them through the highs and the lows, the struggles and the victories. But those movies, like the insular world in which white people are able to live, are fiction. At least they do not reflect my reality, or the reality for other people of color in the United States.

I would also say that they do not reflect white people's own reality that they choose to ignore. And so it is not privilege itself that I begrudge white people, but the failure to acknowledge privilege as such. It is true that sometimes I experience a bitterness towards white people's ability to sit within their bubbles and be oblivious to a larger reality. But nothing is more infuriating then when they extend themselves outside of the bubble - but still from within the bubble - to offer their commentary or engage in any sort of activism, including liberal advocacy for people of color on one end of the spectrum and overt demonstrations of racism on the other.

In other words, if they - white people - are going to live within the bubble, then they should tuck in their arms and legs and detach themselves entirely from the greater reality, and not pretend to understand a single thing about the world outside. They should not argue with people of color over their perceptions, they should not deny any grievances. They should just respectfully decline any investment in the conversation and retreat to the comfortable confines of the bubble.

The alternative, of course, is to come full-bodied outside the bubble and to embrace, however difficult, the full reality of race and power as it applies to them, and to their relationships with people of color.

Valentine's Day is a day that, like all good cynics, I take issue with for all the usual reasons:

1. Why should we only pay special attention to our significant others on a certain day?

2. The holiday is just part of a consumerist scheme to support the "industrial complex"

Blah blah blah. Whatever. It's all true, of course, but I wasn't going to post anything about it until I came across this promotional offer from XBox Live. It offers some free Microsoft Points if only you'll watch one of the offered movies with your loved one on Valentine's Day. Sounds like a good deal, except for the wording of the advertisement.

It annoyed me right away on a subliminal level, although it took me a bit of time to rationalize why exactly I took issue with it. At first it was the dichotomy between those who have "someones" and those who do not. I must either a sentimental sap who likes frilly pink hearts simply for having a girlfriend, or I'm some chest-pounding "manly-man" type who "don't need no stinkin' girlfriend! Guys rule!" Is that it?

I couldn't possibly be a guy who is between relationships, or a guy who for the sake of career, livelihood, or personal choice, just doesn't have a significant other? I couldn't be a girl who is single for any of the same reasons? Or a girl who doesn't like frilly pink hearts? I couldn't be a gay man or woman in a relationship where such cave-painted gender roles aren't so clearly established? I couldn't be a person of any gender and sexual orientation who appreciates a romance movie, even watched in solitude? Maybe I'm some basement-dweller with the social skills of an empty pizza box and movies are my escape from harsh reality, in which case, thanks for reminding me of that.

Then there's the matter of which movies are offered to either side. If I'm the romantic type, I must want to watch some trite garbage like The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past or the insufferably pointless and overrated Paranormal Activity. But if I'm not - if I'm the skull-crunching manly-man type, or the lonely lurker type - then I must want something involving drunken stupidity like The Hangover, the pulp sensationalism of Inglorious Basterds, gangsters in Public Enemies, explosions like G.I. Joe, or a healthy dose of racism like we find in The Goods - you know, because the target market probably isn't Asian or anyone else who might be offended by Asian stereotypes.

Because all real chest-pounding manly men enjoy that kind of stuff.

As a guy in a successful heterosexual relationship, his ad was tailor made for me, right? Except that I hate most romance movies no matter who I'm watching them with, because of their hackneyed storylines and characters who are either unrealistically beautiful or exaggeratedly hideous only to - by way of magic or hard work - become unrealistically beautiful. Except that I don't buy into the idea that ideals like love or tenderness or sensitivity or - you know, generally not being some chest pounding machismo asshole - are mutually exclusive from my identity as a man.

Maybe I'm making a mountain out of a mole hill, but the shit just annoyed me. Maybe me and my girlfriend, instead of exchanging frilly pink hearts, like to share a cocktail inside of a flaming skull right before we headbutt each other. With love. You don't know. It's just more evidence of how the consumer culture is so oblivious or indifferent to the many different types of ways that people can choose to interact with one another - and not just on Valentine's Day.

A Response to Fade to White by Ishmael Reed

In a New York Times Op-Ed, Ishmael Reed discusses the movie Precious, and how it was offensive to the African-American audiences to whom he spoke, while being more widely accepted by white audiences.

He writes:

Among black men and women, there is widespread revulsion and anger over the Oscar-nominated film about an illiterate, obese black teenager who has two children by her father. The author Jill Nelson wrote: “I don’t eat at the table of self-hatred, inferiority or victimization. I haven’t bought into notions of rampant black pathology or embraced the overwrought, dishonest and black-people-hating pseudo-analysis too often passing as post-racial cold hard truths.” One black radio broadcaster said that he felt under psychological assault for two hours. So did I.1

It seems to be Reed's contention that the heart-wrenching portrayal of an African-American woman living in a terrible situation is palatable to white Americans because they already think very little of how African-Americans live. On the other hand, African-Americans whose lives do not in any way resemble that of Precious should be offended for how that story misrepresents them.

And here is where Mr. Reed and - everyone else who feels this way - makes a critical mistake. Like so many others, he treats the example of one individual who happens to be African-American necessarily as a representation of all African-Americans. This kind of presumption is one that bubbles up from the cracks of institutionalized racism. It is an irony and a travesty where African-Americans themselves - like Mr. Reed - are instilled with racist presumptions by way of this institution.

One of the many dimensions of racism is that people of color are seen first for their race and second - if at all - for their individual merits. Along with this also comes the idea that the actions or experiences of one African-American somehow represents all African-Americans. For example, the more salacious behavior of some African-American celebrities - like rappers or athletes - are taken as evidence of some moral depravity inherent to their race.

It is this way of thinking that gives rise to stereotypes. Every stereotype has some basis in reality. But where the actions, thoughts, or experiences of an individual or even a small group of people are taken to represent the larger group to which they belong, it becomes racism.

Where an African-American watches Precious and feels some personal shame or awkwardness, especially where they are in the company of white people, it suggests that they have internalized this idea that every African-American by default represents their entire race. Where a white person watches Precious and somehow feels more "informed" about the black experience or feels some remorse for African-Americans as a whole, only shows just how ill-informed they are for assuming that all African-American experiences are the same.

I cannot pretend as though I am unaffected by this experience. When watching Tyler Perry's latest movie I Do Bad All By Myself, I was acutely aware of the fact that there were white people in the audience. Part of my anxiety stemmed from the thought that while African-American audiences were laughing "along with" the movie, white audiences were laughing at the movie, in a finger-pointing sort of way. Somewhere in my mind I assumed that white people would walk away from this movie with the idea that they obtained some glimpse into African-American life. And found it hilarious. Which of course, in turn, must mean that they are laughing at me. The pathology of the black experience and institutionalized racism are deeply rooted.

Tyler Perry doesn't claim to represent all African-Americans in his films. Rather he is crafting stories that represent particular experiences that otherwise would not be shown in predominantly white Hollywood. Because I have had this discussion about representation and institutionalized racism - both internally and with others - I am able to assuage any feelings of anxiety after the fact. But it would seem that this conversation is not taking place nearly enough.

No one watches a movie like 8-Mile and presumes that it represents all young white men, or even all young white men who grew up in Detroit. No one presumes that American History X reveals the typical everyday experience of white people. No one listens to a news story about a white mother murdering her child and assumes that such a thing is commonplace amongst white families. So why should anyone take Precious to be a representation of African-Americans in general, simply because the main character and most of the cast happen to be African-American?

Precious is only one story - an extreme case, yet a case that undoubtedly reflects or touches on the real experiences of particular individuals in this country. At no point did Sapphire - author of the original book, or Lee Daniels - director of the film (both of whom are African-American) - state that Precious was a "black story" or representative of the African-American experience in general.

Looking at the bigger picture, the existence of this paradigm of one-represents-all suggests something even more critical. That "blackness" - in how it purports to categorize and define a large number of diverse people - and "individuality" are mutually exclusive. It highlights the shame inherent to the black experience, instilled by the history and present reality of racism, such that one feels an automatic need to distinguish themselves and their experiences from other African-Americans who are quite unlike them.

It suggests that we - as a nation - are past due for a revolution in our way of thinking, that is one that lies outside of race, yet not without serious consideration for how race has affected and continues to influence our social dynamics.
