a person able to ignore or deny certain realities, such as racism, sexism, classism, sexualism, ableism, or religious prejudice by virtue of the privilege associated with membership within a dominant group.

Word Origin & History
A play on words, the pronunciation of “Not-See” invokes the word “Nazi”. The crimes of the former are passive instead of active – those who would turn a blind eye to injustice rather than perpetrating it themselves. The ideologies of both, however, are predicated upon a certain egocentrism, social privilege, and stark self-versus-other mentality.

Not-Sees are people who witness racism or other prejudices and either are unaware of it, or even when made aware of it, deny it – even going to great lengths to explain it away or dismiss the grievances of those affected by that prejudice. Not-Sees love to use the term “race-card”.

Look into any discussion in an online forum about, say, whitewashing – or racebendingas it pertains to the upcoming Last Airbender film:

Here’s a clue – people invest millions of dollars into films because they want to make more millions of dollars, not because they want to help insecure people feel better about themselves. If some of the title roles are played by “white” actors, it’s not racism, it’s marketing.1

What should Obama’s Presidency mean to people of color?

President Obama: Symbol of a Post-Racial Society?

In the latter weeks of the Presidential election, I had already started to become disenchanted with Mr. Obama.  For the same reasons as most progressives – his steady accommodating shifts towards the right, as he positioned himself as a rank and file Democrat.  Don’t get me wrong.  I voted for him, and I can even say I like the guy, but so far he has not been a President who has lived up to all the “hope”.

In thinking about what his presidency means, with regards to him being the first African-American to take the office, there was much to consider.  So much talk about its historicity, and its symbolism, and the introduction of the term “post-racial” to the common parlance.

It’s mostly nonsense.

There is no doubt in my mind that had Barack Obama been anything other than African-American – even Hispanic or Asian or any other non-white minority – that he would not have won the primary, let alone the overall election.  I do not mean to take anything away from Mr. Obama – he is brilliant, eloquent, right-minded, and every bit qualified to occupy the office of President of the United States.  I mean to say that his ethnicity shone like a beacon to draw attention to his many other merits, whereas he may have been obscured by other Democrats more established around the time that he made his first mark on the public back in 2002.

Let’s not harbor any illusions here.  Mr. Obama’s ethnicity secured him much of the non-white vote – especially amongst African-Americans and Latino-Americans, which make up a sizeable portion of the electorate.  Again I am not saying that the groups voted for him simply because of his ethnicity, but because his ethnicity gained him their attention.  In terms of adequately representing the needs and interests of the non-white demographic, Obama was hardly the best candidate.  That honor goes to Representative Dennis Kucinich, who even had the political chutzpah – no, the balls – to say that he would have a discussion around the issue of reparations.  But Obama was the better politician – he knew how to navigate the waters between left and right so as not to out himself as too much of a liberal like Kucinich, accusations of being a socialist notwithstanding.

And so he won.

But what does his victory mean, really, to people of color?  To me?  Not as much as all the “historicity” and “symbolism” suggests.  In some ways, I feel that his victory may even have set us back, as a nation still struggling with its identity and attempting to reconcile the differences between its disparate ethnic groups.  The idea of a “post-racial” society is nothing short of regressive, because what it does is promote the idea that we are somehow beyond racism simply because we elected an African-American President.  Given the progress that we have made in this country’s 234 year history – full of small hard-fought victories – how could a two-year campaign and election possibly have served to completely eradicate racism?  It’s a ridiculous – and delusional – proposition.

In my studies to become a secondary school teacher, there has been a major focus on how to provide for the needs of students who speak – or are learning to speak – English as a second language.  There are federal guidelines to that effect, and every state has its own program for meeting the federal requirements, in accordance with No Child Left Behind, and to continue to receive federal funding.

I’ve long understood that language and thought are two sides of the same coin, meaning that language acquisition is critical to learning.  For students from other countries who come to live and learn in the United States, their ability to speak – and think – in English is vital in determining their success academically and in their future lives as participants in our society.  I have never been of the ethnocentric mindset that non-English speakers should learn English out of some obligation to the country or its citizens.  I think that it is well within a person’s rights to maintain their first language and never learn of bit of English, if they are able to live comfortably while doing so.  Where an inability to speak English inconveniences native English speakers, as happens often enough in customer service scenarios, it is not the fault of the non-English speaker, but of the company that hired the worker in a capacity where speaking English was important.  After all, where customer support lines are outsourced to other countries, it has nothing to do with customer convenience, and everything to do with the company maintaining their bottom line – that is, saving money.

What’s important is that we recognize that all language has equal value within its own cultural context.  For non-English speakers who live in and work in settings where English is not used or even necessary, it certainly should not be required.  Any talk of English being the “official” language of the United States is nothing less than xenophobic nonsense.

However, there is much to be said about the practicality of learning and using English in contemporary American society.  Because of the great cultural plurality that makes up the United States milieu, it can be expected that there would be a common language to allow all of its disparate members to communicate.  English is as good a choice of any, and is in fact the best choice, if only because it is the language of academia and of commerce.  This means that in order for people to have equal access to education, and to be well-positioned to participate in the U.S. economy, it is important for them to learn English – and not just any English, but Standard American English (SAE). This is not about acquiescing to the prejudices of those who devalue other languages, but for the the obvious utility of knowing the language that undergirds American society.

The Whiteness Virus

Whiteness is a virus – both physical and memetic.  Physical through the human medium, manifest in conquest, rape, plunder, mass murder, subjugation, and enslavement.

Memetic in that it has convinced people of diverse backgrounds and interests to shed their individuality, their cultures, their morals, for the promise of something better – a chance to be a member of the ruling class.

It spread to the Irish in America and manifested in the antagonistic relationship between the police and just about every non-white ethnic minority.  It spread to the Italians and made them forget how they were wop ginnies yesterday in exchange for a chance to be just white tomorrow – and to fight vigorously against other groups for the scraps from the ruling Anglos’ table.

The whiteness virus, contrary to popular belief, is not genetic, but it might as well be in how it infects children by way of their parents not much later than they have their first concept of a “self” and “other”.

The whiteness virus is made up of ideas. And all bad ones.

The primary symptoms of the virus are privilege, denial, fear, and willful ignorance.  Unlike other illnesses, for which we scramble to find cures, there is virtually zero incentive for those with the white virus to seek treatment.

An Open Letter to Steven Sailer

Steven Sailer is a journalist and blogger who has made a reputation for himself for claiming that African-Americans and Mexicans are less intelligent than white people and Asians, for the mere fact of their race.  He often cites obsolete and long disproven research to make his case.  While I have chosen to address this open letter to Sailer, it presents an open question to all peddlers of scientific racism.

Dear Mr. Steven Sailer,

You are a very dangerous man.

Most of the time, people I argue with about race (and the alleged qualitative differences between races) are ill-equipped for the fight, and their arguments are easily defeated. This is mostly because they argue from an emotional platform — justifying venomous preconceptions because of personal grievances without examining the non-facts that underpin them. The pretentious and self-proclaimed intellectuals amongst them argue on the basis of ancient and obsolete scholarship — indeed straight out of the Carleton S. Coon school of anthropology.

You, on the other hand, seem to be a member of that intellectual elite who have studied to some degree the current biological/genetic/anthropological literature, and who comes out on what I’d consider the “wrong side” of the debate. But because you have studied the literature, your arguments — probably wasted on the majority of your audience, who lack the intelligence to understand them — are difficult to defeat because the jury is still out on the real genetic differences between groups
