Clinton vs. Thompson

Clinton vs. Thompson. Mark my words. These will be your candidates for the 2008 Presidential Election. What, did you think it would be Giuliani, because many polls show him as being the front runner? Well the reason he won’t win is because his pro-choice and pro-LGBT stances, along with the fact that he is an open cross-dresser, will alienate the most powerful Republican voting bloc – the Christian conservatives. You’ll notice that not too many polls have been taken in the Bible Belt, or in the evangelical-dominated mid-Western states. And Fred Thompson, who has regularly been in second place in most polls even before he announced his candidacy, will only now gain more momentum after his formal announcement. He is the second-coming of Reagan, the Republicans’ beloved icon, an actor-turned politician. He even has the look Americans seem to want in their Presidents – being a tall, broad-shouldered, square-jawed white man.

And as the GOP continues to distance itself from Bush – yes now they want to openly criticize him, as he can no longer run for any public office and is of no use to the party – they stand to restore the constituency’s faith. If Fred Thompson’s candidacy somehow hearkens back to the “glory days” of Reagan – then the GOP will achieve their goal in spades – even to the point of Thompson being capable of defeating Clinton. Clinton, who in spite of her perpetual and strategic sliding towards the middle, is still a woman, which loses her some votes, and is still a Democrat which makes her forbidden to many Republicans. Lest we forget that this is the country that voted George W. Bush into office – not once, but twice – there is every possibility that we will see another conservative Republican in office. And that, quite frankly, is depressing. And today, on the 6th anniversary of the Twin Towers attack, I can’t help but think what role fear will play in the election. God forbid we be attacked again, but that would be just the thing to herd all the sheep back into the Republican pen where it’s “safe”. I hope that my cynicism is only that, and not foresight.
