Ideals vs. Practice

The trouble with ideals is that they don’t often transition well into practice. Even as I write articles discussing the abolition of the race paradigm, I realize the inherent problems. For one, it can only work if it is implemented authentically, not superficially. It is not enough to remove race from public discourse if people are still mentally categorizing people and judging them as such.

In practice, were race to be abolished tomorrow, it would invalidate equality initiatives such as Affirmative Action, since many the benefits conferred by the program are based on race. So if the abolition of the concept of race was implemented only with regards to public policy and “official” social norms and mores, but did not truly disseminate within the public consciousness, then it would be meaningless.
